Topic: Walking Stick with Motion Detectors
Every day, the vision impaired have to struggle with walking independently and we wanted to come up with a design to solve this problem. Currently, walking sticks do not come equipped with any type of motion sensing device that can let the walker know if there are any upcoming objects. The only way to discover an object is if the walking stick makes contact with anything or with the help of another individual.
The design that we chose is a walking stick that will have an ultrasonic sensor attached to it that can sense moving or stationary objects. The walking stick is hollow inside in order to run wires from the ultrasonic sensor to the Arduino. In addition an 8 ohm speaker will also be attached to the Arduino and will emit a beeping sound when the ultrasonic sensor senses an object. Therefore, with these designs, the vision impaired can now walk and know when objects are approaching without the help from others.
